YCN Student Award brief set by Castrol. Collabration with Jack Butcher.

Whilst researching for this brief, we found there to be a number of confusing elements across the board; oil classifications were unclear, and product ranges were almost impossible to tell apart. With this in mind we set about creating a system that encompasses each of Castrol’s product ranges and their respective products within one visual.

The system has been developed to simplify the selection process for the consumer, considering both print based and electronic ‘key’ systems.
Each of the four existing Castrol ranges is represented by a single character and coloured quarter. Within the given quarter, a cut-out segment illustrates the operating temperatures of the particular oil. This scale allows us to visualise any of Castrol’s products.

The system can be translated onto any paper or digital media. Electronic point of sale systems in store could be implemented to improve the consumer’s experience as well as the possibility of product selection on the Apple iPhone. The app would impliment technology already utilised by Castrol on their website, the consumer can search for the correct oil type by simply inputting their vehicles registration.
